You know that feeling when you walk into a café, order a drink, and the first thing you ask is not for sugar but for the WiFi password. Sometimes you do not even need to ask. A shiny little network name appears on your screen with the word free in it. Free WiFi. Free internet. Free happiness. You connect without thinking.

Now picture someone else in the same café. Not ordering coffee, not talking to anyone. Just sitting quietly with a laptop. While you are refreshing Instagram and checking your email, this person is watching the invisible river of data that flows through the network. Every website you visit, every request your phone makes, is passing right by their screen.

If they are ambitious, they might set up their own fake WiFi with a name like Cafe_WiFi or Airport_Free. Your device does not care which is real, it just wants to get online. The moment you connect to their trap, you are not on the internet anymore, you are on their computer. From there they can inject malware, steal cookies that keep you logged into websites, or even copy your login details if the connection is not properly encrypted.

And here is the sneaky part. Your phone is always calling out the names of networks it remembers. Home, Office, Airport Lounge. Anyone listening can see that list and build a profile of where you live and work. By the time you happily post a picture of your cappuccino, they already know much more about you than you would ever guess.

The solution is not complicated. If you have mobile data, use it. If you must join public WiFi, run a VPN so your traffic looks like scrambled noise to everyone else. Ask staff for the official network name instead of trusting the first one you see. And definitely turn off that auto connect setting that makes life easy for you and easier for hackers.

Free WiFi is never really free. Sometimes the price is your privacy, sometimes your accounts, and sometimes even your identity. Next time you see that tempting network pop up on your screen, remember that the person in the corner might be sipping more than just coffee.
