A shocking case from Ghaziabad, India, has reminded everyone just how vulnerable our digital lives can be.
A 54 year old woman from Indirapuram, Ghaziabad got a call from someone claiming to be her mobile service provider. They told her she needed to upgrade her SIM from 4G to 5G. It sounded routine and harmless. She followed their instructions and shared a few OTPs they asked for.
A few hours later, her phone stopped working. By the time she realized something was wrong, more than ₹18.5 lakh had quietly vanished from her bank accounts.
When she went to get a new SIM, it would not activate. That is when she discovered that the scammers had already moved her number to an eSIM on their own device and were receiving all her calls and OTPs.
This Is Bigger Than Just One Incident
This is not just another isolated scam. It is a glimpse of what could become very common.
Around the world, phone makers and telecom companies are rapidly moving towards eSIM. It is smaller, easier to activate, and better for the environment. Some new phones do not even come with a physical SIM slot anymore.
But while eSIM brings convenience, it also makes SIM swap attacks far easier. Because everything happens digitally, fraudsters no longer need to physically get hold of your SIM card. If they can convince you or your mobile company to transfer your number, they can take over your phone in minutes.
And once someone controls your number, they control the codes that unlock your bank accounts, social media, and work accounts. It is not hard to imagine how this could become a global problem as more people move to eSIM.
